Many farmers depend on their crop production to run a successful business.  Just like any other business owner, they work hard to get the most out of their operation.  Unlike other businesses, there are many unpredictable and unchangeable outcomes such as storms, fires, disease and wildlife that can devastate hours of hard labor and potential revenue.  Crop insurance is federally supported and regulated and is sold and serviced by private-sector crop insurance companies and agents such as Pound Insurance Center.
